Hey all! Things have been really crazy around my house these past few weeks, what with starting a new job and moving! I swear there is a book in my purse right now, waiting for me to crack it open! It is an adult chapter book! Can you believe it? Those of you that may know me already may know that I usually am reading some type of children's or YA book... but I actually just finished another adult chapter book Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford. I picked it up because it was the One County book in Schenectady. I was very happy that I did! The story follows an older man of Chinese descent. The narration flows back and forth between present day and the 1940's as he was living in the San Francisco area as World War 2 was well underway. He falls in love with a girl in his sixth grade class. Unfortunately she is of Japanese descent. Knowing a little about history will help you know why this was unfortunate.
I really enjoyed the way the novel mixed the romance with the history of Japanese internment. It really made that piece of history a much more personal story. I was really surprised when I was on Amazon and read the not so nice review Publishers Weekly gave Jamie Ford. I guess we can't all agree. I thought the book was wonderful and the author wove a great story of love, loss and redemption. Next on the agenda is The Gurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Society! ...as a Library Teacher in Schenectady, here is a link to my other blog. You may or may not be able to read it in district!
