Left orphaned by a mother who died after child birth, Lanesha is raised by Mama Ya-Ya, and old mid-wife who can feel and see things other people can not. So can Lanesha. She can see and talk to ghosts and spirits.
This does not help her fit it with her classmates. But she owns who she is, and she is not afraid of them.
This novel was amazing, even though the whole time, you KNEW hurricane Katrina was coming. The novel. was even counting down the days to the storms impact. If you know what happened to the Ninth Ward near New Orleans, then you KNOW what was about to happen to Lanesha, Mama Ya-Ya and their home.
I couldn't stop reading. Although I didn't want to know what happened in the end, I couldn't help but hoping that things might turn out okay for Lanesha.
Although the events surrounding Ninth Ward were real, and the devestation was complete, and is still not completely undone, one can read this novel, and come away from it, with just a sliver of hope. That maybe we can come out of such a travesty still believing everything just might be okay.
