Newbery Winner, 2011!
I loved this story (but really, what stories don't I love?) :-)
Manifest is a quaint town in Kansas, just barely getting by during the Great Depression. Abilene is dropped off in Manifest by her father, who leaves her in the care of Gideon, who either does, or does not run a speak-easy (a place to get bootleg alcohol) while he takes a job on the railroad.
Not knowing if her father is coming back leaves Abilene feeling alone in the world. She spends her summer trying to write a summer assignment she was given on HER first (and the last) day of school before summer vacation, paying off her debt to a "diviner" who sees things and tells wonderful tales, and all the while trying to figure out who the Rattler is (was he/she or wasn't he/she a Nazi spy during WWII?) And by the way, how on earth does her father fit in to all these people, places and events?!
Filled with mystery, but really just a touching coming of age story, Moon Over Manifest is about a girl trying to find her own path through life.
